Sew on buttons
Sewing on buttons sounds quite simple. But who would have thought that you can still learn a lot here and there are a few tips and tricks. It’s also worth being brave and showing off the repairs to the clothes, for example with colorful buttons or interesting sewing techniques.
Material
- Textile to be repaired
- Button (in the right size so that it fits through the buttonhole)
- Yarn (color to match button or textile)
- Sewing needle
- Spacer (match, knitting needle, …)
Tips and tricks
- Use the thread twice.
- Make the repair visible by using colorful yarn or a button that does not resemble the others. Try some unusual and creative sewing patterns.
- If the fabric is thin or torn, sew a smaller button on the back as a counterweight. This distributes the tension of the yarn and prevents the fabric from tearing so quickly.

This is how it works:

1. double a long piece of sewing thread (at least 60 cm) and thread it so that a loop forms at the end.
2 Pierce the fabric with the sewing needle from bottom to top at the desired button position. Do not pull the thread all the way through so that a loop remains on the back. Stitch back one millimeter further and pull the thread through the loop and tighten. This means that no knot remains visible on the back.
3. later the button needs a certain distance to the fabric where the fabric will be around the buttonhole. To do this, place a stick, e.g. a match, knitting needle or something else on the button.
4 Sew on the button together with the darts using 3-4 stitches. Creative stitch patterns can also be tried out.
5. pull out the stick.
6 Wrap the thread around the thread bundle several times. This is the so-called stalk.
7 Sew a few stitches through the stem and cut the thread.
